Looking to buy new, and the dealer has one of each. Besides appearances, anything different mechanically? $700 difference.
Thanks,
Jim

the decompression system is different the 04-07 have the old version and the 08's and 09's have the auto decompressor.
you have to use different cams with the auto one

Only the 08/09 electric start models use the new cam though. The kick start version uses the same cam as all the other years do. I would get the 07' and use the extra money for a exhaust and cam.

Thanks for all the inputs guys. But, I am going to expose my noobness and ask what a battery tender is?
I think I will make the illogical choice and go for the '08. Why you ask? Well the '07 is the smart decision, and this is going to sound dumb, but the only '07 OTD Cycles has is white. Every Honda I have ever had has been red, and I love Honda Red. So, I am going to pay an extra $700 for the color of plastic.
I know, I know. Please don't rail too hard. But, as my wife says, if you are going to buy new, buy what you want do you don't regret it later.
Thanks again for all the replies.

a battery tender is a trickle charger that you hook your battery up to and its always giving your battery a very small charge so your battery won't go dead on you. I'm pretty sure that in 08, honda started putting these on the er versions, so you won't have to buy one, all you do is plug it into an outlet.

08/09has a better intake boot from air box to carb 08 comes with 55 leek jet 07-06 has 70 leek jet. 08/09 450er hot cam 2 is a better cam than 07/08R and older hot cam. these were the only change from 06-07 to 08-09

It's not a better cam it does the same exact thing performance wise as any of the other years it just has a auto decomprssor which most guys like the manual one anyway plus you can't use like the 02' crf cam or any of those on the 08'/09'er's.
To the original poster I would seriously consider gettin the 07' then just buy the red plastics with the money you saved and keep the white ones as a spare or sell em. Battery tender's are like $25 so not a big deal there.

I'd get the '07 and use the difference to buy better aftermarket plastics like they said above.
Take it from me, the auto-decompression is a pain in the ass if you want to do anything to alter compression later. One good thing about the auto-decompression is that it is easier to tune--- because you can't tune it-- which brings me back to the point of auto-decompression being a pain in the ass.

07 you could keep the stock plastecs uy aftermarket, and still have nough for the cam, then sell the stock and have at leasta slip on exhaust
