2017 FIAT 500 review: Our expert's take
What it is: The two-door, four-seat Fiat 500 competes with subcompact cars like the Mini Cooper and Smart ForTwo. A cabrio version, dubbed 500c, is available, and buyers can also opt for a high-performance Abarth model or, in select states, the fully electric 500e. All versions have front-wheel drive.
(Skip to details on the 500c, 500e, 500 Abarth)
Fiat has simplified the lineup to three trim levels: Pop, Lounge and Abarth.
- 101-horsepower, 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine
- Five-speed manual transmission
- Front-wheel drive
- Uconnect multimedia system with Bluetooth
- Power-adjustable heated side mirrors
- Remote keyless entry
- 50/50-split folding backseat
- Cruise control
- Air conditioning
- Required in every new car: front airbags, antilock brakes and an electronic stability system
- Six-speed automatic transmission
- Leather-trimmed seats
- Power moonroof
- Automatic air conditioning
- Heated front seats
- Navigation system
- BeatsAudio premium sound system
The 500c has a cloth top with various retraction settings, from a sunroof-like ceiling opening to a completely stowed accordion — rear window and all — perched over the trunk. The roof retracts with the touch of a button at speeds up to 60 mph but, unlike in most convertibles, it doesn't take the side-pillar structure with it. That makes for more of a panoramic moonroof effect than a true droptop experience.
- 101-hp, 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine
- Five-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission
- Trunk compartment in place of hardtop's hatchback cargo area
- High-performance Abarth version offered
Back to top
The 500e is a battery-electric version of the 500 hardtop for sale in select states. The EPA gives the 500e an 87-mile estimated driving range.
Powering a 111-hp electric motor, the thermally managed lithium-ion battery pack can be recharged in less than four hours with a 240-volt Level 2 charging setup (sold separately). On a normal household power outlet, Fiat says it takes less than 24 hours to recharge the battery.
- Unique aerodynamic components
- Additional interior sound insulation
- Navigation system with electric-vehicle-specific features
- Push-button transmission
Fiat's performance-oriented Abarth model comes in 500 hatchback and 500c soft-top form, and it competes with sporty models like the Mini Cooper S. Its turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine makes 160 hp.
- Dual tailpipes
- Functional bumper inlets for engine's two intercoolers
- Rear spoiler
- Performance suspension
- Bolstered sport seats
- Electronic stability system with partial-off mode

Fast, agile, cheap Italian fun, yet reliable
Originally, I was looking to get a 124 Abarth, but the package I wanted didn't work out with my budget. I got set up with my 500 Abarth, and it has far exceeded my expectations. Comfortable even for taller frames in the front, quick even from the factory, and an exhaust note that thrills throughout the rev range... definitely not a typical 4 cylinder sound due to the dual exhaust setup. The only qualms I have are with the very cheap underpinnings on the interior pieces. The armrest pins holding the top on snapped within a month, and the driver's side window mechanism shattered in the door, making it inoperable. However, fixing these things myself has been exceedingly cheap and easy. The handling of the car is honestly incredible, it feels super solid with no shimmy or wiggle through varying curves and height. The auto transmission, especially in sport or track mode, is quick to shift and keeps the engine in the turbo's powerband easily. I would have preferred a manual, but I am honestly impressed with it. I've owned the car for over a year now, and every time I get in, it's never failed to thrill.

Owns this car
I love to drive my FIAT 500 Abarth, manual shift. The driving experience is smooth and responsive, visibility is unparalleled and the interior design is perfect: the dashboard is streamlined and uncluttered. For those who wonder about safety, a larger car (not SUV) ran into my previous FIAT 500 Abarth; all the airbags deployed and I walked away while the car was totaled. I purchased another FIAT 500.
